Families Forward Virginia in partnership with the Virginia Nurturing Network presents the Nurturing Network Training Workshop. This workshop will take place on May 29, 2020 from 9:30am - 4:00pm at the Families Forward Virginia office located at 8100 Three Chopt Rd., Suite 212, Richmond, VA 23229. The trainer facilitating the workshop is Carol Dolber McMurray, MSW, ACSW, Nationally Recognized NPP Trainer/Consultant. Guest speaker, Dr. Fran Kaplan, MSW, EdD, Co-Founder and Lead Trainer/Consultant for Nurturing Diversity Partners, will speak on the topic, “Racism as Trauma, What Helping Professionals Need to Know.” The following is an overview of the workshop:
Over the past 30 years, educators, mental health, social service and other helping professionals have been introduced to the evolving theory and practices of trauma-informed care. Trauma-informed treatment tends to focus on facilitating an individual’s or family’s recovery and resiliency. That’s important, certainly – but...what if the very country you live in is traumagenic? This interactive multimedia workshop explores the 400-year history and impacts of our country's racial hierarchy and the implications for all Americans of racism as a deeply embedded social structure. Dr. Kaplan shares a new awareness and assessment tool (the ID-ACEs: Identity-based Adverse Collective Experiences Inventory) and details how helping professionals can work to dismantle systemic racism and heal its traumatic impacts.
The early registration fee is $50 per person and will increase to $60 per person after April 27, 2020. Fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, and refreshments. All hotel costs, travel arrangements, and other meals are the responsibility of the agency attending. Training is limited to the first PAID 40 registrants. The registration and cancellation deadline is May 22, 2020. Invoices are available upon request. Unless there is an emergency, full refunds will only be issued with a cancellation of 7 days in advance of the training date. Please see supplemental materials for a more detailed workshop brochure, registration instructions, registration policy, and nearby hotel information.
