PSDB: Postpartum CAPPA Doula Training

Course Title: CAPPA Postpartum Doula Training 
Trainer: Katie Nyberg, CLD, CPD, CNPE, CLE, CPST
Timing: 18 hours; Broken out over three days (8:30am – 3:30pm).

Please note that partial credit will not be applied for this training. All sessions in this series must be attended. Sessions will be held November 12th, 19th and 26th. 
 
Description: CAPPA Postpartum Doulas fill an important role in providing emotional, physical, and evidence-based, informational support to the new family after the birth of their baby. During this training, you will learn ways to support new parents as they recover physically from birth, cope with fluctuating hormones and possible mood disorders, learn newborn characteristics and daily care, discuss infant sleep and calming techniques, and learn infant feeding support tips. After this training, you will receive a one-year CAPPA Membership which includes benefits like weekly emails containing tips/info for supporting families, annual conference admission, CAPPA online support community for professionals, free monthly education center videos, and more! Learning Objectives: 
  1. The participant will identify ways to support a person through their physical recovery after birth. 
  2. The participant will be able to list ways to care for a newborn through daily care like infant baths, diaper changes, and post-birth care. 
  3. The participant will compare ways to be an advocate for the new parent(s). 
  4. The participant will be able to demonstrate various baby calming techniques. 
  5. The participant will be able to explain various safe infant feeding options available to a birthing person in the first weeks after birth.   
 
Prerequisite Required: Prenatal Basics for Home Visitors 
 
Competencies Addressed: Infant and Early Childhood Development; Child Health, Safety, and Nutrition; Community Resources and Support; & Relationship-Based Family Partnerships.
 
Reflective Questions: 
  1. Imagine you are working with a family that is struggling to soothe their crying infant. Identify how you would educate and support them on calming techniques.
  2. Describe how you would support parents’ understanding of selecting, preparing and serving infant foods in a safe and healthy manner. 
  3. How have you applied the information you learned from this session to your practice?
