MAR 06, 2023
2:00 pm CST

Course Title: Safe Sleep Education Training
Trainer: Casey Manser, Executive Director Iowa SIDS Foundation
Timing: 2 hours; Offered One Time Per Semester

Description: Each year in the United States, 3500 infants die of sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. After a substantial decline in sleep-related deaths in the 1990s, the overall death rate attributable to sleep-related infant deaths has remained stagnant since 2000, and disparities persist. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a safe sleep environment to reduce the risk of all sleep-related deaths. A safe sleep environment involves baby sleeping Alone on their Back, in a safety-approved Crib. This training will help equip Home Visiting staff to educate their clients regarding safe sleep practices and provide life-saving information regarding risk reduction. Participants will gain knowledge on how to navigate difficult conversations with families and caregivers and learn how to empower caregivers to keep their babies safe during sleep.
